In this Golfer's Journey series, we introduce Dane Hall, an ex-pro surfer from the UK who discovered a love for golf in Portugal. Dane's introduction to golf came through a good friend, and although he played occasionally as a child in England, his primary focus was always on his surfing career. Surrounded by professional golfer friends, he never pursued golf seriously during his teenage years. However, after feeling burnt out from surfing, Dane sought a new challenge. His friend Joe reintroduced him to golf, and Dane quickly grew to enjoy it, finding similarities between the precision required in surfing and golf. The challenge of mastering a new sport captivated him, and he particularly admires Rory McIlroy’s technique and dedication, which inspire him much like the technically perfect surfers he once admired.

Dane also enjoys following golf personalities on YouTube, such as Grant Horvat and the Bryan Brothers, who bring interesting dynamics to the sport. For Dane, playing golf is a constant mental battle, with moments of great success and frustrating lows. He experiences highs and lows; one moment he's hitting great shots, and the next, the worst. This fluctuation in performance challenges him to maintain a positive mindset, teaching him resilience and the importance of staying optimistic.

One of Dane’s most memorable experiences was making a par at the Royal Óbidos golf course. Although he had only been playing for a few months, he hit a great pitching wedge onto the green on the third hole, an island green, and made a par. This early success gave him a sense of magic and hooked him onto the sport. Additionally, Dane enjoys the smart and formal style of golf apparel, a refreshing change from his usual surf attire of t-shirts, flip-flops, and wetsuits. He finds joy in dressing in polo shirts, nice trousers, shoes, and hats, appreciating the variety and elegance of golf fashion.

As Dane continues his golf journey, he finds joy not only in the game but also in its culture and community. The challenges and successes on the golf course enrich his life with new experiences, teaching him valuable lessons about resilience, optimism, and the importance of embracing new passions. Through golf, Dane has found a new avenue to challenge himself and grow, both as an athlete and an individual.
